Sports Illustrated first appeared on newsstands in August 1954 and quickly established itself as the leading sports periodical in the country. As a special promotion in conjunction with Topps, the first two issues each included a three-page foldout insert of twenty-seven cards on slick paper stock designed in the style of 1954 Topps baseball cards. Issue #1, of course, is especially significant as the first issue of the popular weekly magazine. The cards in issue #2 feature the Yankees, including Mickey Mantle, who does not appear in the regular 1954 Topps baseball set. Offered here is a high-grade collection of the first five issues of Sports Illustrated, each encapsulated and graded by CGC. The collection is comprised of the following: 1) August 16, 1954, Volume 1 #1 (CGC 9.2); 2) August 23, 1954, Volume 1 #2 (CGC 9.4); 3) August 30, 1954, Volume 1 #3 (CGC 9.0); 4) September 6, 1954, Volume 1 #4 (CGC 9.0); and 5) September 16, 1954, Volume 1 #5 (CGC 9.0). Total: 5 magazines. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+.
