Rare pin-back button commemorating the Boston "Miracle" Braves 1914 World Championship. The colorful celluloid button features a portrait illustration of an Indian brave in full headdress and is lettered "Boston Braves Champions 1914" along the perimeter. It is interesting to note that of the few other examples of this particular button we have seen (featuring a colorized Indian brave, as opposed to solid red), all were part of a more elaborate ribbon pin produced specifically for members of Boston's legendary Royal Rooters. (The button was the third and bottom-most component of the pin, which included a brooch and silk ribbon.) Because this is the first example we have seen in pin form, the possibility exists that it may have simply been removed from the more elaborate ribbon pin and given a pin back. Of course, it is equally possible that it was issued as a stand-alone pin. Since so few examples exist in any form, we will probably never know for certain. Either way, this remains an exceptional and rare souvenir dating from the Braves' memorable "Miracle" season. The button (2.25 inches in diameter) displays light wear and oxidation to the reverse. In Excellent condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
