Ticket stub to Game 3 of the 1911 World Series between the New York Giants and Philadelphia Athletics held at the Polo Grounds in New York on October 17th. The "Game 2" denoted on the ticket refers to the second World Series game at the Polo Grounds, which was Game 3 of the Series. Game 3 witnessed a classic pitching duel between Christy Mathewson of the Giants and Jack Coombs of the Athletics. Mathewson was undefeated in World Series play going into the game, and had already defeated the A's in Game 1 of the Series. Unfortunately for Giants fans, Mathewson's World Series mastery ended on this day. Nursing a 1-0 lead entering the ninth, Mathewson surrendered a game-tying home run to Frank Baker (his second in as many games, a feat which earned him the nickname "Home Run" Baker) before eventually losing the game 3-2 in eleven innings. The A's went on to win the Series in six games, including another victory over Mathewson in Game 4 (the Series was interrupted by rain for seven days following Game 3). The ticket (1.25 x 3.25 inches) displays a light diagonal crease along the right border and is in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
