Exceedingly rare Detroit Tigers pennant commemorating the club's three consecutive pennants from 1907 to 1909. The small, yellow-felt pennant features an illustration of a tiger head in the upper left corner, with the lettering on the right and below reading "'07-8-9/Champions." This is the first example of this particular pennant we have ever seen, let alone offered. The only similar type pennant we have seen is a 1907 example, which is identical in design, but only has the year "07" listed. Obviously, the club simply added each championship year to the pennant in succeeding seasons, culminating in this "three-peat" example. Not surprisingly, this pennant is new to the hobby. This example, along with the 1912 Boston Red Sox pennant and the circa 1916 Boston Red Sox pennant in this auction, all originate from the family of a gentleman who lived in Boston in the early 1900s. (He obviously collected pennants, because the family had a large number of less valuable nonsports pennants as well. These three were the only baseball pennants in the collection.) Unfortunately for Tigers fan, this pennant never bore the lettering "Worlds Champions" because the club lost the World Series in each of those consecutive 1907 to 1909 seasons. The pennant (15 inches) displays a clipped tip and light soiling. Portions of what appear to be the original black tassels remain stitched to each corner. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. This is an extraordinary piece in all respects and one that would be among the highlights of an advanced baseball-pennant collection. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
