Offered here is one of the rarest of all nineteenth-century Spalding store-model bats: a black-ringed "zebra" bat. Although known in the Spalding catalog as its "No. XX" model, collectors have often referred to it as the "zebra" bat because of the approximately sixteen black stripes that encircle the barrel. This is the first example we have ever offered, and we can only recall having seen one other at auction in the past fifteen years. The bat, which features the Spalding logo and model number on the barrel (below the ring), displays moderate use, including fading to portions of the painted rings. This is a fine example of this Spalding rarity and one that would be a welcome addition to any advanced nineteenth-century or store-model bat collection. Length: 33 inches. Reserve $500.
