Collection of three M101-2 Sporting News
supplements: Joe Jackson, Honus Wagner, and Frank Baker. This sepia-tone premium set was issued with the Sporting News
between the years 1909 and 1913. Each premium was issued on only a single day and is dated in the upper right or left. Their method of issue and thin paper stock on which they are printed make these unusual and striking premiums particularly susceptible to damage. This lot is highlighted by Joe Jackson, the key to the M101-2 set and one of only a handful of vintage Joe Jackson issues. The Jackson premium was issued on March 23, 1911 and features the future Black Sox legend with the Cleveland Americans. Jackson has a few creases including a horizontal crease across the bottom, and a few chips and tears along the edges. On the reverse are two pieces of white framer's tape and some light toning. While technically in FAIR condition, the condition flaws are minor and the premium has a strong VG appearance. The two remaining premiums grade as follows: 2)
Honus Wagner - issued September 23, 1909. Presents as EX from the front with a crisp image of Wagner in a batting stance and four strong corners. Technically grades lesser due to a vertical crease that runs down the center and a second crease in the lower left corner most visible against the blank reverse. 3)
Frank Baker - issued September 15, 1910. Flawless image of Baker fielding, presenting as Vg from the front, but technically grading lesser due to two pieces of white framer's tape on the blank reverse. While each premium technically grades modestly, all three maintain a superior and extremely presentable appearance and represent an exciting, relatively affordable opportunity to acquire card-related items of Jackson, Wagner, and Baker dating from their playing days. Dimensions: each approximately 9.75 x 8 inches. Total: 3 premiums. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+.
