Rare Spalding promotional photo of Roger Maris as a member of the Cleveland Indians, signed by Maris in red ink (grading "8/9"). Fortunately, Maris chose to sign the photo atop his image, with the white background of his uniform providing exceptional contrast to the signature. The photo captures Maris striking a fielding pose at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium, with the printed caption along the base reading "Roger Maris Is A Member Of The Spalding Baseball Advisory Staff." This photo dates from either 1957 or, more probably, 1958, as Maris only played a season and a half with the Indians before being traded to the Kansas City Athletics on June 15, 1958. As such, it is an extremely early Maris promotional piece, not to mention a rare one as well. This is the first example of this photo we have ever seen, making it one of the most desirable Maris autographed pieces imaginable. The photo (8 x 10 inches) displays a few tiny areas of surface paper loss along the white border areas, as well as a number of minute surface wrinkles (only visible when viewed at certain angles). In Excellent condition overall. Full LOA from PSA/DNA and auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
