One-page contract, between Roger Maris and The Autographed Ball Company of High Point, North Carolina, signed five times by Maris. This agreement allowed The Autograph Ball Company to reproduced Maris' signature on its line of souvenir "team-signed" baseballs bearing the stamped facsimile signatures of the respective players. Because the company needed different size Maris signature examples, depending upon where his signature would go on the ball, Maris was required to provide four separate signature examples at the base of the contract, which he did in blue ink. Additionally, Maris signed the contract, as did a representative of the company. The five Maris signature examples grade "7/8" on average. Although the contract is undated, it most likely dates to 1957 or 1958 because the contract features the name "Larry Raines" typed at the top as "the party of the second part." Raines' name was later crossed out and Maris' added by hand in blue ink. Raines only played two seasons in the majors, 1957 and 1958 (only 9 games), both of which were spent as Maris' teammate on the Cleveland Indians. Given that dating, the five Maris signatures offered here represent extremely early examples that most likely date from his rookie season. The contract (8.5 x 11.25 inches) displays one vertical and three horizontal folds, three torn notebook holes along the left border, a few minor abrasions, and has been laminated. Without respect to the lamination, the piece is in Very Good condition overall. Full LOA from PSA/DNA and auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
