The excitement generated by Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris' historic pursuit of Babe Ruth's single-season home-run record in 1961 quickly resulted in the manufacture of a multitude of retail products bearing their endorsement. One of the most attractive and substantial such items from the era was a baseball-theme radio produced by Stellar. Offered here is a fine example of that classic piece that has also been signed by Mantle! While we have handled many examples of this classic radio, this is the first we have ever offered signed by Mantle, and we cannot recall having seen another. Ideally, Mantle has not only signed it in silver paint pen (grading "10") on the top, but has also added his uniform number, "No. 7," below his name. Housed within a wood case, the unit has a molded plastic front featuring the raised-relief image of a generic batter (in a Yankees uniform) displayed over the speaker panel. In keeping with the baseball motif, the green on/off knob is diamond-shaped and the tuning knob is in the form of a baseball bat. The facsimile signatures of Mantle and Maris appear along the base. We have not tested the radio for fear of possibly damaging the piece (the original electrical wiring remains intact) and, as always when dealing with very old electrical pieces, we recommend that the winning bidder first have it examined by a qualified electrician prior to plugging it in. Both the facing and wood casing display light wear overall. In Excellent to Mint condition. 7.25 (W) x 4 (D) x 5.25 (H) inches. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
