Eight-page program, for a dinner held in honor of Harold G. Hoffman's 45th birthday at the Hotel Commodore in New York City on February 6, 1941, signed by Babe Ruth. The Ruth signature offered here is notable for being one of the boldest examples we have seen on a program of this sort. Ruth has flawlessly inscribed the program in black fountain pen along the top border of the cover "Sincerely Babe Ruth," with the signature grading "10." This program is simply a seating list for the dinner, which, given the hundreds of names included here, was one of the social events of the year. Hoffman served as both governor (1935-1938) and congressman (1927-1931) in New Jersey during his long political career. At the time of this dinner he was director of the New Jersey State Unemployment Compensation Commission. Interestingly, Ruth's name is not on the seating list, so either he crashed the affair or it was obtained on the program sometime after the event. Whatever the circumstances of the signing were, it remains an exceptional Ruth signature in all respects and one that would be a welcome addition to any advanced autograph or Ruth collection. The program (6 x 9.25 inches) displays a number of minor edge tears to the covers and pages. In Very Good condition overall. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $2,000++.
