This particular Babe Ruth personal check is all the more desirable because Ruth has signed it TWICE: once on the front and again on the reverse as an endorsement. Of all the Ruth personal checks that exist, only a tiny percentage share this special distinction. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, with each signature graded NM-MT 8. The check, dated "June 30, 1937" and drawn on the Chemical Bank & Trust Company of New York, is made out to "Cash" in the amount of "$50.00." It has been signed "G. H. Ruth" on the both the front and reverse in black fountain pen. Many years ago several hundred Ruth checks originating from the family appeared on the market all at once. These have long since been absorbed and now Ruth checks are increasingly difficult to find (let alone twice-signed examples). Checks have long been a favorite of autograph collectors due to their inherent authenticity and the fact that the signatures on checks are almost always very well executed. The offered check is no exception and represents an extraordinary Ruth signed piece. The check (6.25 x 2.75 inches) displays normal bank cancellation stamps and holes and a spindle hole (none of which affect either of the Ruth signatures). In Excellent condition. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+.
