Presented is an outstanding collection of 140 different cards produced by BBM, a Japanese trading-card company, depicting Ichiro Suzuki and spanning his Japanese playing years of 1993 to 2001. BBM is arguably the most prominent card manufacturer in Japan, equivalent to Topps or Upper Deck, and represents the standard for modern trading cards featuring Japanese players. Ichiro Suzuki is notable for becoming the first Japanese player to play in the Major Leagues when he was signed by the Seattle Mariners, but he enjoyed a very successful career in Japan prior to coming to the United States. As one of the Japanese game's greatest stars, it is no surprise that scores of cards were produced with his likeness. The offered collection consists of 140 different cards, entirely graded and encapsulated by PSA. This grouping includes every single Ichiro base, insert, and error card, as well as very nearly every single promotional or redemption card produced by BBM during the years 1993 to 2001. (There remains five or six cards our consignor was unable to track down during his years of collecting Ichiro, most of which he has never even seen.) Many of the redemption or “Lottery/Sweepstakes” cards as they are known in Japan, were produced in quantities of as few as 100 and have realized prices as high as ¥50000 ($500) in the rare occasions they’ve been brought to market. The collection consists of forty-five cards graded GEM MINT 10, seventy-two cards graded MINT 9, one card graded NM-MT+ 8.5, and twenty-two cards graded NM-MT 8. This is the largest assembly of Ichiro BBM cards that we have ever seen offered, and we believe it to be one of the most comprehensive collections available, a result of years of dedicated collecting by our consignor. A complete inventory listing of cards within this collection is available upon request, but some of the highlights include: 1) 1993 BBM #239 Ichiro Suzuki RC (GEM MINT 10). 2) 1994 BBM #403 Ichiro Suzuki (MINT 9). 3) 1994 BBM #A42 Ichiro All-Star (GEM MINT 10). 4) 1995 BBM #AA2 Ichiro All Around Players (MINT 9). 5) 1996 BBM #M7 Ichiro Magic Motion Cards (GEM MINT 10). 6) 1996 BBM Diamond Heroes #R7 Run Producers (GEM MINT 10). 7) 1997 BBM #R1 Ichiro Diamond Heroes Run Producers – Gold/Lottery Card (MINT 9). 8) 1998 BBM #D8 Ichiro Dream Team – Silver/Lottery Card (MINT 9). 9) 1999 BBM #D8 Ichiro Dream Team – Non-Die Cut/Lottery Card (MINT 9). 10) 2000 BBM #R3 Ichiro – “1993 BBM” Rookie Reprint (MINT 9, 1:900 packs). 11) 2000 BBM #B7 Ichiro Best Nine ’99 – Gold Ink/Lottery Card (MINT 9). 12) 2000 BBM #BN7 Best Nine 90’s (MINT 9). 13) 2000 BBM #G7 Ichiro Golden Glove/Lottery Card (MINT 9). 14) 2001 BBM #B15 Ichiro Best Nine/lLottery Card (MINT 9). 15) 2001 BBM #B33 Ichiro Best Nine/Lottery Card –one of 100 produced (GEM MINT 10). 16) 2001 BBM #G16 Ichiro Golden Glove/Lottery Card – one of 100 produced (GEM MINT 10). 17) 2001 BBM #G34 Ichiro Golden Glove/Lottery Card – one of 100 produced (MINT 9). Ichiro's rich tradition is excellence is on display throughout this collection, and it serves as a wonderful illustration of his prominent Japanese career through BBM trading cards. This is a superb collection in unparalleled condition that would be a worthy addition to any Ichiro Suzuki or Japanese-card collection. Total: 140 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open).
