Highlighted by the rookie cards of HOFers Nolan Ryan and Johnny Bench, the 1968 Topps set also includes the extremely popular “combo” cards featuring more than one player, with #480 Superstars (with Roberto Clemente), #490 Superstars (Harmon Killebrew, Mickey Mantle, and Willie Mays), and #530 Bird Belters (Frank and Brooks Robinson). This is a very sharp-looking complete set, grading 21% Nr/Mt (including a few better), 53% Ex to Ex-Mt, and 26% Vg to Vg-Ex (including twenty lower). We have submitted six cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. Keys:
#20 B. Robinson (Ex+), 45 Seaver (NM/MT+ 92), 50 Mays (85/15 L/R, otherwise Ex-Mt+), 80 Carew (Vg), 100 Gibson (Nr/Mt), 110 Aaron (Vg+), 145 Drysdale (Ex-Mt+), 150 Clemente (MINT 96), 177 Ryan RC (EX/NM 80), 220 Killebrew (Ex), 230 Rose (Ex), 240 Kaline (Gd), 247 Bench RC (NM/MT 88), 250 Yastrzemski (Vg-Ex), 280 Mantle (VG/EX 50), 330 Maris (Nr/Mt), 355 Banks (Vg), 370 Aaron AS (Ex), 374 Clemente AS (Nr/Mt+), 408 Carlton (Vg), 480 Manager's Dream (NM/MT+ 92), 490 Superstars (20/80 T/B, otherwise Nr/Mt), 500 F. Robinson (Vg-Ex), 520 Brock (Vg), 530 Bird Belters (Ex), and 575 Palmer (Vg). Very clean and crisp overall set with the usual number of mostly minor centering problems. The equivalent SMR value for just five of the graded cards (excluding the VG/EX Mantle and factoring in the two half-grades at the lower whole-grade level) is $2,180. Total: 598 cards. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500+.
