1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge Cabinet Cap Anson - Outstanding Example!

Reserve - $2,500. Estimate - $10,000+

Extraordinary example of Cap Anson from the N173 Old Judge cabinet series. The N173 Anson is one of the most impressive of all Cap Anson cards, and one of the most sought-after of all nineteenth-century cards. Presented is a spectacular example with a very bold image and strong contrast. The mounted photograph is perfectly rectangular and the mount displays little to no wear along the edges or at the corners. We submitted this card to PSA expecting a very high numerical grade (it is the first N173 Anson they've ever graded), but instead received the card encapsulated as "Authentic". We inquired as to why (so that we could properly describe the card in the catalog description as we found no issue with the card that would preclude it from receiving a numerical grade) and were told that, as per PSA policy, the card was encapsulated as "Authentic" solely because there is evidence of pencil erasure on the reverse. It is very hard to see, but it is there! Had the small pencil mark not been erased, the card would have received a very high numerical grade with an MK qualifier. While REA grades this card very different than PSA (we grade this card "EX-MT with small pencil erasure on reverse"), it does not change the fact that in any holder this is the finest N173 Old Judge cabinet of Cap Anson that we have ever handled! In fact, when our consignor purchased this card at auction (elsewhere) over a decade ago, it was described as NR/MT-MT and sold for an astounding $21,000. This was not an unfair grade at the time (grading standards have evolved over the years). We are confident that advanced collectors will not be fooled by the label and will appreciate the overall quality of the card, the stunning image quality and tremendous presentation. Most nineteenth-century card collectors are concerned first and foremost with the image quality of cards and recognize that flaws on the blank reverses "come with the territory" when collecting cards from this era. In addition to the previously mentioned erasure, there is a small, red-colored blemish visible in the top left reverse corner. This is an outstanding N173 Old Judge Cabinet, with a flawless image and contrast, of legendary Hall of Famer Cap Anson, and one that would be a significant highlight in even the most advanced world-class collection. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $10,000+.
