1920-1925 Spalding Official National League Ball in Original Box

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $830

Addendum: It has been brought to our attention that this ball, while it is a Spalding Official National League Ball dating from the 1919-1924 time period with factory-applied stampings on the Top, sweet spot, and bottom panels the same as the 1919-1924 ball specified, the fact that "John C. Toole, President International league" is stamped on the exterior sealing band (where a “Heydler” stamping would usually be) suggests that the enclosed ball will feature Toole’s facsimile signature on a side panel as opposed to that of National League president John Heydler. The possibility also exists that the enclosed ball might display an "Official International League" factory stamping on the reverse sweet spot, in addition to the standard “Official National League” stamping on the sweet spot. REA thanks Brandon Grunbaum, baseball expert and author of History of the Base Ball, (http://www.historyofthebaseball.com/) for taking the time to share this information with us!

Rare Spalding official National League baseball still housed in its original unopened box. The box is complete with its original, unbroken, paper band. Based upon the picture of the ball featured on the lid, this example can be narrowly dated to the 1920 to 1925 manufacturing period. There is some light foxing and toning to the paper band. The box displays only a few extremely light creases and minor corner wear, otherwise it remains in virtually the same condition as when it was first issued. In extraordinary Excellent to Mint condition and easily one of the finest surviving examples. Obviously, without opening the box it is impossible to state with certainty what condition the ball is in, but it would be hard to imagine it as anything but Mint. This is the earliest unopened official National League (Heydler) ball we have ever offered, and we cannot imagine that more than a handful have survived in such exceptional condition. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $830
