1925 National League "Golden Jubilee" Baseball Pass
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,067
Baseball pass issued to the mayor of Chicago, the "Hon. William E. Dever," in 1925 on the occasion of the National League's "Golden Jubilee" 50th anniversary. The pass is presented inside a leather wallet (3.25 x 2.75 inches) that opens up to reveal a circular gold medallion insert designed in the shape of a baseball, set within a velvet matting. (We believe the medallion is 14K but cannot remove it to see the stamp on the reverse.) The gold medallion reads "1876-1925 National League Golden Jubilee" in blue. Printed in gilt lettering upon the interior front cover is the number "11" (denoting the issue number of the pass) and the recipient's name. The National League's 50th anniversary was celebrated with great fanfare. This pass was designed to be saved as a special keepsake for recipients, though distribution must have been very modest: We can recall previously seeing only a couple of examples of these ever offered in years past. Our consignor received this piece from his grandmother, who was William Dever's secretary during his term as mayor of Chicago (1923-1927) Dever presented it to his secretary as a gift and it has remained in her family until now. The exterior binding displays moderate wear, but the interior portions remain in Near Mint condition. The gold medallion is also in Near-Mint condition. This is a high-grade example of this rare pass, and one that has the added appeal of having been issued to one of the most prominent politicians of the era. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+.
