Freestanding Original Yankee Stadium Seat (from 1974 R. J. Reynolds and Korvettes Promotion!)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,541

Offered is a desirable piece of baseball history in the form of an original single seat from Yankee Stadium. This seat, bearing the stenciled seat number "22," was originally obtained in 1974 as part of a joint promotion between the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and Korvettes, a discount department-store chain. Patrons could turn in a few empty packs of Winston cigarettes at participating Korvettes stores and, in return, receive a Yankee Stadium seat that had recently been removed during the stadium's renovation. This is a particularly nice example that was probably situated in one of the last rows against the concrete backing. As a result, the back was difficult to paint, and the reverse of the chair still shows areas of its original green paint when it was originally installed in 1923. During its decades of service, this chair has witnessed dozens of World Series games, and the finest moments of the careers of Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, and Maris, as well as all of the other great players who have made the Yankees the greatest dynasty in the history of the game. The freestanding seat displays normal wear commensurate with its age and former use, including chipping to the blue paint (revealing traces of the original green paint underneath) and oxidation to the exposed metal framework. Unfolded, the seat measures 24 (W) x 17 (L) x 31 (H). The substantial size/weight of this item requires that there will be a shipping charge for this lot (which will vary depending upon where it is being shipped). The shipping charge will be billed separately from the auction invoice. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,500+. SOLD FOR $1,541
