1924 Walter Johnson and Babe Ruth in Hollywood Photo Collection (6) - Direct Johnson Family Provenance!
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $593
Collection of six original photos capturing Walter Johnson in 1924 as he visits the Hollywood set of The Thief of Bagdad, starring Douglas Fairbanks. Johnson is pictured in every photo, and is joined in five of them by both Douglas Fairbanks and Babe Ruth. Johnson and Ruth were in California on separate barnstorming tours at the time, but were persuaded to "face off" against each other in one final game on October 31st. The next day, which is when these pictures were taken, Ruth and Johnson visited the set of The Thief of Bagdad, where star Douglas Fairbanks took the time to give them a tour of the set and studio. Interestingly, Ruth toured the set in his uniform. Maybe he knew that a game on the set would be inevitable, for in one photo Fairbanks is wearing a full set of catcher's gear. Each of these photos originates directly from a Johnson family member and has been in the family's possession since 1924. Four of the photos measure 8 x 5 inches, while the other two, both of which bear "Keystone Photo Service" credit stamps on the reverse, measure 10 x 8 inches. All display surface paper residue on the reverse from having once been mounted, and then removed, from an album. In Very Good condition overall, with two of the photos displaying a few minor edge tears. Total: 6 photos. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $593
