1924 Walter Johnson Barnstorming Photo - Direct Johnson Family Provenance!

Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $830

Rare original photo capturing Walter Johnson during a West-Coast barnstorming tour in the fall of 1924. Johnson is pictured warming up on the sidelines wearing the uniform of a local company team. The photo is affixed to a brown paper backing, along the base of which is the handwritten notation "In the uniform of the Los Angeles Soap Co. - Oct 1924." This photo originates directly from the Johnson family (of special note: the writing along the base is that of Walter Johnson's wife) and is most likely the only surviving example, as we have never seen another. Barnstorming tour photos of any kind from this era, let alone one picturing a Hall of Fame player like Walter Johnson, are exceedingly rare and this is an especially desirable example. The photo (8 x 10 inches) displays a number of light surface wrinkles throughout (most can only be seen when viewed at certain angles) and is affixed to its backing by means of adhesive. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $100. Estimate $300+. SOLD FOR $830
