1909-1965 Baseball Magazine Collection (154)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,541
Collection of 154 different issues of Baseball Magazine, spanning the years 1909 through 1965, including twenty-seven examples dating prior to 1920. For over fifty years, beginning in 1908, Baseball Magazine was the voice of the National Pastime, documenting every nuance of the game and its history in word and photographs. Today, Baseball Magazine is no longer published, but old issues open a window to history that is unrivaled, providing information and photos that often can be found nowhere else. Its research value aside, collectors have always prized the magazine for the tremendous display value of its classic covers. The issues offered here are no exception! While many of the early, pre-1940 cover illustrations are generic in nature, the overwhelming majority of the covers for the later issues feature photos of future Hall of Famers, either alone or with other players. The offered collection includes the famous Walter Johnson cover from April 1915, as well as cover photos/illustrations of Mickey Mantle, Ty Cobb, George Sisler, Edd Roush, Grover Alexander, Eddie Collins, Bucky Harris, Burleigh Grimes, Stan Musial, Ted Williams, and Connie Mack. The magazines offered here, with the number for each (if more than one) noted in parenthesis, are as follows: 1909 : Dec. 1912 (3 issues): July, Oct., and Dec. 1913 (5 issues): March, April, June, Nov., and Dec. 1914 (5 issues): Jan., April, May, Aug., and Sep. 1915 (2 issues): April and Nov. 1916 (6 issues): Feb., April, May, June, July, and Aug. 1917: April. 1918 (2 issues): March and April. 1919 (2 issues): July and Oct. 1921 (2 issues): Jan. and June. 1924 (7 issues): Feb., May, June, July, Aug., Sep., and Oct. 1925: Nov. 1926 (3 issues): Aug., Sept., and Oct. 1927 (4 issues): Jan., Feb., March, and April. 1929 (7 issues): Jan., Feb., March, April, May, Sept., and Oct. 1930: Dec. 1931 (2 issues): Nov. and Dec. 1932 (2 issues): May and Aug. 1940: Dec. 1944 (3 issues): Oct., Nov., and Dec. 1945 (7 issues): Feb., March, May, June, Aug., Oct., and Nov. 1946 (3 issues): Jan., March, and July. 1947 (10 issues): Feb., March, April, June, July, Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov., and Dec. 1948 (12 issues): complete year, Jan. through Dec. 1949 (12 issues): complete year, Jan. through Dec. 1950. (12 issues): complete year, Jan. through Dec. 1951 (9 issues): Feb., March, April, May, June, Aug., Sept., Nov., and Dec. 1952 (5 issues): Jan., July/Aug., Sept., Oct., and Nov. 1953 (8 issues): complete year (some months were combined into a single issue). 1954 (3 issues): Sept., Oct., and Nov/Dec. 1955 (3 issues): Spring, May, and June. 1956 (4 issues): May, June, Aug., and Oct. 1964 (2 issues): Nov. and Dec. 1965 (4 issues): Jan., Feb., March, and April. The condition breakdown, by range of years, is as follows: 1909-1919 (Poor to Fair); 1921-1932 (Fair to Good), and 1940-1965 (Good to Excellent, averaging Very Good). Also included are four issues of Baseball Monthly from 1962: March, April, May, and June (Vg overall). As collectors of early publications in general, and Baseball Magazines in particular, are well aware, condition is tricky to capture with a simple grade. There are so many pages, and so many potential condition issues (especially small tears, for example) that even in technically modest grade (which, when accurately described, most early issues are!) they have great merit. And that is certainly the case here! Total: 158 magazines (154 issues of Baseball Magazine and four issues of Baseball Monthly). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,541
