1913-1914 World Tour and 1915 Trans-Continental Tour Programs (2)
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $356
Pair of two early and scarce tour programs dating from the three-year period 1913-1915. 1) 1913-1914 World Tour Program. The 32-page program, titled "Touring the World/New York Giants/Chicago White Sox/1913-1914," features small portrait images of John McGraw (Giants manager), Harry Hempstead (Giants owner), Charles Comiskey (White Sox owner), and James Callahan (White Sox manager) on the cover. Those same portrait images are featured on the interior, as are photos of the American and National League team owners, and the members of the National Commission. Included within the pages are the entire itinerary for the tour, both domestic and international, numerous advertisements, and a scorecard section. The preprinted lineups include Jim Thorpe, Fred Snodgrass, Hans Lobert, and Christy Mathewson for the Giants, and Buck Weaver, Hal Chase, Sam Crawford, and Ray Schalk for the White Sox. The program is not scored.
While not as well known today as Spalding's legendary 1888/1889 World Tour, which was extensively covered in a number of early history works, the global navigation made by the New York Giants and Chicago White Sox in 1913-1914 was, by all accounts, equal to its predecessor in every way and much celebrated at the time. This is a rare souvenir from that sojourn and the first example we have offered. The program (10 x 8 inches) displays heavy wear, including a vertical fold and a number of edge tears, one of which affects most of the interior pages as well. The covers are separated from the book, and are now held together by tape along the spine. Four of the interior pages have separated from the spine as well, but are present. In Fair to Good condition. 2) 1915 Trans-Continental Tour Program. 32-page program issued for a tour across the United States made by a select all-star team of major league players from both the American and National League. The interior pages feature photos of the players on each team, plus that of Frank Bancroft, the manager of the tour, and team photos of both 1915 World Series participants, the Red Sox (with Babe Ruth) and Phillies. The program also extensively documents, both in text and photos, the 1913-1914 World Tour and the prior 1914 Trans-Continental Tour. The preprinted lineups include Wally Schang, Otis Strunk, and Wally Pipp for the American League team, and Max Carey, Johnny Evers, Jake Daubert, and Heinie Groh for the National League club. Partially scored in pencil. The program (6.75 x 10 inches) displays heavy staining on the cover, which also affects many of the interior pages, a small tape repair to the spine, and minor edge tears. In Fair to Good condition. Total: 2 programs. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $356
