1889 “Pennant Winners” New York Giants Commemorative Plate
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,185
Stunning example of one of the overlooked classics of nineteenth-century baseball display pieces: a rare souvenir plate issued in commemoration of the New York Giants pennant-winning season of 1889. This is one of the most distinctive baseball display pieces of the 1880s, and one of the most unusual and substantial items ever produced honoring one of the era's greatest and most celebrated teams. The decorative design, which is highlighted by portrait illustrations of twenty team members on the front, is lettered "The Pennant Winners 1889" on the top rim of the plate and "New York Base Ball Club" along the bottom rim. The twenty players pictured here are Ewing, Connor, Welsh, O'Rourke, Keefe, Ward, Mutrie (Mgr.), Murphy, Crane, George, Weidman, Cleveland, Slattery, Richardson, Tiernan, Gore, Hatfield, Brown, Titcomb, and Foster. Illustrations of bats and baseballs, respectively, on either side of the rim complete the attractive motif. The Giants, with a lineup boasting six future Hall of Famers, captured their second consecutive World Championship in 1889 by defeating the American Association champion Brooklyn Bridegrooms in the World Series. Commemorative pieces from this era, outside of programs and photos, are exceedingly rare and this plate is no exception. Few examples are known (we have seen at most ten or twelve over the years). Its rarity notwithstanding, this is also one of the finest examples we have ever handled. The plate displays only general wear commensurate with its age and is in Excellent to Mint condition overall. Most notably, it is free of any chips or cracks, which are common flaws to this piece. Diameter: 8 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,185
