1888 Jersey City Ball Club Team Photo and Schedule Display

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $948

This striking display piece was issued in promotion of the Jersey City Ball Club in 1888. The center portion features twelve members of the club posing together in uniform, with each player identified in print below the photo. The team's home schedule for the months of June, July, August, and September is printed on either side of the photo. The caption along the top border reads, "Home Games At Oakland Park," while the lettering along the base identifies the team and year: "Jersey City Ball Club, 1888." A copyright notice in the lower right corner of the photo reads "N. Y. Sporting Times Pub. Co." Jersey City, known as the Skeeters, was a member of the short-lived Central League in 1888 (the league, a low-level minor-league circuit, only lasted one season). Later the club was a longtime member of both the Eastern League (1902-1911) and the International League (1912-1933). As noted on the display, other towns represented in the Central League at the time were Newark (NJ), Scranton (PA), Wilkes-Barre (PA), Binghamton (NY), Elmira (NY), Allentown (PA), and Easton (PA). This piece was intended for display in local Jersey City stores as both an advertising piece and to acknowledge support for the home nine. As such, it has a single grommet at the top so that it can be easily hung on a wall. Nineteenth-century displays such as this are rare and we have never seen another example of this particular piece, making it a truly unique and early souvenir relating to Jersey City's best-known professional ball club. The display (18.5 x 13 inches), which appears to be printed on heavy paper stock, has had professional restoration to a number of border tears, as well as to a vertical tear running through the photo. Although the areas of repair are evident, they are quite unobtrusive and do not detract from the display's outstanding Excellent overall appearance. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 25.5 x 20 inches. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $948
