Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris Signed Baseball
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,541
Official American League (Cronin) ball signed in blue ink (grading "7) on separate side panels, respectively, by Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. Each player has included the personalization "To Don/Best Wishes" before his respective signature. Mantle/Maris signed baseballs have always been highly prized by collectors and remain the most desirable dual-signed ball combination in the hobby with the exception of a Ruth/Gehrig example. They are also rare. Despite the duo's fame following the historic 1961 season, balls signed by the pair are much scarcer than one would imagine. The primary reason for that is the fact that Maris passed away in 1985, just prior to the "signing-show boom." Unfortunately, the high demand for Mantle/Maris signed balls, coupled with their scarcity, has resulted in countless forgeries over the years. Given the large number of problem "Mantle/Maris" balls circulating in the hobby today, sophisticated collectors have come to truly appreciate how rare and desirable authentic examples, such as this, are in today's marketplace. While we do not know exactly when or where this ball was signed, the fact that it is an OAL (Cronin) ball dates it to the 1960-1973 manufacturing period. As such, there is a possibility that it was signed by each player during his active playing career. The ball displays light-to-moderate soiling and is in Excellent condition overall.
