Circa 1936 Multisgned Ball with Gehrig and DiMaggio
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,015
Spalding "Official International League" ball signed in black fountain pen by thirteen major league players, including Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio. Gehrig's signature (grading "6/7") sits prominently on the sweet spot, while DiMaggio's ("7") occupies a side panel. The remaining signatures are those of Burleigh Grimes, Bill Dickey, Lefty Gomez, Buddy Rosar, Steve O'Neill, Frank Reiber, Mike Meola, Jack Burns, Ted Petoskey, John Heving, and Don Ross. All of the players represented on this ball played in the 1930s, but not at the same time, indicating that the signatures were probably obtained over a period of time. The signatures range from "4" to "9," averaging "6/7." The ball is moderately toned and has been coated with a light layer of protective shellac. A minor abrasion affects one of the side panels, but does not touch upon any of the signatures. In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,015
