1956 Abbott and Costello Signed "Who's On First?" Record Album

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,185

Abbott and Costello will forever hold a special place in the hearts and minds of all baseball fans by virtue of their classic comedy routine “Who’s on First?” Offered here is an extremely rare signed vintage 1956 RCA Victor 78-rpm recording of their famous routine. The album has been signed in blue ink by both Bud and Lou on the record’s "side 2" label, with each signature grading "9/10." This particular record was apparently specially produced for the Baseball Hall of Fame, as noted by the printing on the label which reads “Abbott and Costello’s ‘Who’s on First?’ – Presented to National Baseball Hall of Fame Museum – Cooperstown, N. Y. – 1956.” Lou Costello died in 1959, so there was only a very short window for other examples of this 1956 album to possibly be signed. This is only the third example of this extremely rare signed record we have ever handled (or even seen). The first example appeared as Lot 976 in our May 3, 2008, auction, where it realized a final sales price of $3,818. The other appeared as Lot 1082 in our May 2010 sale, where it sold for $1,763. This is an extraordinary Abbott and Costello "Who's On First?" signed piece and one that would make a significant and unique addition to many different types of advanced collections (baseball, Hollywood, comedy, popular culture, etc.). The record displays some chipping to a small area along the outer rim, as well as a few minor scratches. In Very Good condition overall. Together with its original brown paper sleeve (Ex). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,185
