1942 Babe Ruth Signed Personal Check
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,851
Babe Ruth personal check, dated June 15, 1942, made out to "The Parke Circle Liquor Shop" in the amount of $37.45. Signed "G. H. Ruth" in black fountain pen (grading "9/10") along the base. The entire check, which is drawn on the Chemical Bank & Trust Company of New York, has been filled out entirely in Ruth's hand and bears his name printed along the left margin. Many years ago several hundred Ruth checks originating from the family appeared on the market all at once. These have long since been absorbed and now Ruth checks are increasingly difficult to find. Checks have long been a favorite of autograph collectors due to their inherent authenticity and the fact that the signatures are almost always very well executed. The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays normal bank cancellation stamps and holes (not touching upon the Ruth signature) and is endorsed with an ink stamp by the recipient on the reverse. The check has two very light vertical folds (one of which bisects the Ruth signature) and is otherwise in Near Mint condition. This very Babe Ruth check example sold in a previous REA auction for $4,147 and has been consigned back to auction by the original buyer, who is reorganizing his collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA.Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $3,851
