1925 Miller Huggins Signed Real-Estate Contract

One-page real-estate agreement, dated November 6, 1925, signed by Miller Huggins. This document records the sale of a parcel of land, located in St. Petersburg, Florida, to Miller Huggins by Mr. and Mrs. H. B Rudicill. It has been boldly signed by both parties in black fountain pen at the bottom, with Huggins' signature grading "10." The agreement, drafted by Empire Realty Associates of St. Petersburg, Florida, is fully executed, bearing the notary seal on the reverse. The contract was also officially filed with the state, as noted by the stamping on the reverse that reads in part "Filed for Record in the Office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court of the County of Pinellas, State of Florida on Nov 18 1925." (Note: Once the contract is filed with the state and duly recorded, it is then returned to the realty company; REA checked with the county clerk to verify this fact to make sure there was no title issue with regard to this document, which there is not.) St. Petersburg, Florida, became the Yankees spring-training home for nearly forty years beginning in 1924, so it is not surprising that Huggins, who was also an attorney, would be interested in real-estate speculation in the area. While any Miller Huggins signature example is extremely desirable and valuable (he died in 1929 and is one of the rarest of all Yankee Hall of Famer signatures), a signature on a notarized legal document such as this is considered the ideal for most autograph collectors. That inherent authenticity, coupled with the exceptionally bold signature offered here, makes this one of the finest Miller Huggins signatures extant. The contract (8.5 x 11 inches) displays five horizontal folds, as well as a few tiny areas of light staining. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500.
