Circa 1928 Babe Ruth and Miller Huggins Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,851
Official National League (Heydler) ball (1926-1933 manufacturing period) signed in black fountain pen by both Babe Ruth and Miller Huggins. Ruth's signature sits upon the sweet spot and grades "5/6," while Huggins' signature is located on the north panel and grades "5." This ball was examined by James Spence Authentication utilizing a video spectral comparator, which allows for the observation of latent writing and/or markings. That examination revealed that a number of unidentified signatures were removed from the ball's side panels. While some collectors may deride the practice of removing or covering signatures, for others the ends justify the means. The signatures of Ruth and Huggins alone on a baseball is an extremely desirable combination, especially given the love/hate nature of their relationship over the years. The fact that we have never seen another example was probably a determining factor in the decision of the former owner to remove the additional signatures. Also, Huggins' signature is exceptionally rare due to his untimely demise in 1929. It must be noted that the former signatures are not readily visible with the naked eye and in all outward appearances this example displays as a ball signed by just Ruth and Huggins. We have never seen another ball signed by just Ruth and Huggins, and it is entirely possible that no such example exists. If that is the case, then this ball represents an outstanding (not to mention much more affordable) alternative to that unobtainable rarity. The ball is lightly toned and all of the manufacturer's stampings remain legible. In Excellent condition overall. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,851
