Circa 1928 New York Yankees World Champions Team-Signed Ball with Ruth
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $2,370
Official American League (Barnard) ball signed by nineteen members of the circa 1928 World Champion New York Yankees, including Ruth (sweet spot, grading "5"), Lazzeri, Durocher, Lary, Bengough, Meusel, Koenig, Moore, Grabowski, Robertson, Burns, and Thomas. The Ruth signature alone makes this an extremely desirable ball, and this ball may be of special note to many collectors as it is a relatively affordable example. (A higher-grade Yankees team ball from this era with no "clubhouse" signatures would easily be valued at far in excess of $10,000; in many cases a multiple of that figure for a high-quality example). The signatures of Lou Gehrig, Earle Combs, and Ben Paschal have been deemed "clubhouse" versions by JSA. The remaining signatures have faded beyond legibility with the exception of Floyd Van Pelt. Van Pelt's professional baseball career consisted of two seasons of minor-league ball in 1927 and 1928. The fact that he is on this ball indicates that it might have been signed during spring training, when Van Pelt was trying out for the club, or possibly at an exhibition game against one of the minor-league teams for which Van Pelt was playing at the time. All of the legible Yankee signatures are those of players who appeared on the Yankees' roster in both 1928 and 1929. The signatures range from "1" to "5," averaging "2." The ball displays moderate soiling, as well as a few moderate abrasions. In Good to Very Good condition overall. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $2,370
