Joe Giard Cut Signature (1927 Yankees Key Signature Rarity)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,304
Small cut featuring the extremely rare signature of Joe Giard, a member of the 1927 New York Yankees. Encapsulated by SGC, with the signature certified as "Authentic" by JSA. Giard’s signature has been boldly scripted in black fountain pen (grading "10') on what appears to be the back of a check. There is a red stamped "P" (perhaps part of a cancellation stamp) that touches upon the long downward loop of the "J" in "Joe," and a few of the cancellation perforations touch upon the signature as well. Joe Giard’s Major League pitching career lasted three seasons and he finished with a lifetime 13-15 record and 5.96 ERA. Despite those less-than-impressive accomplishments, his signature is extremely highly prized by collectors due to the fact that Girard is the most elusive of all 1927 Yankees signatures and the key rarity in completing a set of 1927 New York Yankees signatures. Giard passed away in 1956 at the age of fifty-eight. His final season was with the legendary 1927 New York Yankees. The cut measures approximately 2.25 x .75 inches and has been affixed to a slightly larger cardboard backing, which in turn is affixed to an unlined 3 x 5-inch card. In Near Mint condition. This is only the third individual Joe Giard signature example we have ever offered. The first, which was penned on an index card, appeared as Lot 648 in our May 2007 auction and sold for $5,581. The second, taken from an autograph album page, appeared as lot 790 in our May 2012 sale, where it realized a final sale price of $3,851. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,304
