1925 Urban Shocker Endorsed New York Yankees Payroll Check
Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $2,963
Rare 1925 New York Yankees payroll check issued to Urban Shocker, endorsed by Shocker in black fountain pen (grading "9/10") on the reverse. The check, dated July 1, 1925, is also signed on the front in black fountain pen by both team owner Jacob Ruppert ("10") and general manager Ed Barrow ("9"). Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, with the signatures all certified as "Authentic." Shocker, along with Joe Giard and Miller Huggins, is one of the rarest of all 1927 New York Yankees signatures because of his untimely death in 1928 due to pneumonia. This is arguably the finest format one could hope to have for a Shocker signature, given the inherent authenticity of checks, especially with regard to endorsements on team payroll checks. The check (9 x 3.75 inches) displays a moderate vertical fold, a minor vertical crease, and normal bank cancellation perforations and stamps, none of which affect Shocker's signature. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $2,963
