1973 Topps "1953 Reprints" Complete Set (8)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $711
High-grade complete eight-card set of the 1953 Topps Reprint set produced in 1973, one of the most mysterious of all Topps test issues. Each card in this set has been graded by PSA. According to The Standard Card Catalog, some sources say that these sets were produced for distribution as table favors at a Topps banquet. That is certainly a possibility. Whatever their purpose, and however they were distributed (if at all), just about all of the known examples in the hobby can be traced directly to Topps creative director Woody Gelman, who worked side by side with Sy Berger from the earliest days of Topps. Interestingly, when REA sold Sy Berger's personal collection in 2010, he had a group of 15 cards (a set of 8 plus 7 duplicates, Lot 954) among his Topps banquet keepsakes, lending credence to the Topps banquet theory. The set is not exactly a reprint set, but it did utilize the original 1953 Topps artworks of the players included. There is no evidence that this set was ever actually issued in packs. PSA grading composite: Two MINT 9: #5 Newhouser and 8 Mize. Four NM-MT 8: #1 Paige, 2 Robinson, 3 Furillo, and 6 McCullough. Two NM 7: #4 Rosen and 7 Lowrey. This is a tremendous, high-grade set of this extremely unusual issue. Total: 8 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++. SOLD FOR $711
