1968 Bazooka Near-Complete Panel Set (13/15) Including Mickey Mantle

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $4,740

The 1968 Bazooka set is one of the scarcest and most overlooked of all 1960s Topps-related issues. The design of the set was very different from that of all other Bazooka sets. Four small unnumbered vertical player cards were issued on the side panels of each box. The back of each box features a larger numbered card with illustrated tips on various aspects of the game provided by a star whose portrait appears in the upper left corner. Offered is a near-complete set presented in thirteen partial boxes, each of which include the two side panels (two cards per side panel) and the larger bottom panel of a complete 1968 Bazooka box. Missing only the Coaching (Carew/McCovey) and Base Running (Brock/Drysdale/Rose/Santo) panels for completion. This unusual Bazooka set includes all the greatest stars of the era, including Mantle, Clemente, Mays, Aaron, Yastrzemski, Seaver, Gibson, Kaline, Killebrew, Drysdale, Rose, and others. The important Mantle and Clemente side-panel cards are in Excellent to Near Mint condition, with particularly large side borders and only the natural fold on the box present on the right edge. The perimeters of the panels vary with respect to the preciseness of cutting (as is usually the case with hand-cut issues) but they are all neatly executed. All the reverses are clean. This is a very attractive near-complete set of this scarce Bazooka issue. Dimensions of each panel: approximately 5.5 by 6.25 inches. Also included is one front panel. Total: 13 partial boxes (representing a total of 65 cards) and 1 front panel.Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $4,740
