1888 N172 Old Judge Hugh Duffy SGC EX/NM 80 - Highest Graded!
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,963
Graded EX/NM 80 by SGC. Highest-graded example out of forty-six cards evaluated to date. This is an incredible card! N172 Old Judge of Chicago White Stockings Hall of Famer Hugh Duffy (pose #135-3). Stunning ultra high-grade example with 1888 copyright, dating to Duffy's earliest days as a Major Leaguer before he established himself as a future Hall of Famer. Hugh Duffy is credited with one of the greatest single seasons in the history of baseball. Not only did he bat a record .440 in 1894 (a season-high that still stands to this day!), but he also hit 18 home runs and knocked in 145 RBIs, both incredible numbers at the time, which would have been good enough to win the Triple Crown if not for Sam Thompson notching just a few more RBIs. Duffy was a baseball man at heart with a nearly uninterrupted career spanning 68 years (1886-1953) as a player, manager, and scout. Superb photo quality and centering, no creases, four square corners with just a hint of extremely light, even corner wear. The left border of the card is particularly large, the result of a natural slant cut, very common among Old Judges. This is a very crisp, clean, simply outstanding N172 example of Hall of Famer Hugh Duffy from his rookie season with a striking image quality and in a well-deserved extremely high grade. Rarely does one see an Old Judge of Hugh Duffy that holds a candle to this gem. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500++. SOLD FOR $2,963
