1948-1949 Toleteros Hilton Smith Rookie Card SGC EX/NM 80
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,629
Graded EX/NM 80 by SGC. Highest-graded example of Hall of Famer Hilton Smith's rookie card from the 1948-1949 Toleteros set. This is the ONLY example graded at this impressive level between the combined population reports of SGC and PSA. In fact, the two companies have only certified nine total examples of this card in their histories. This is a rare card in any grade but is especially noteworthy given its tremendous high grade and the tendency of Toleteros cards to so often be found in low grade or with various technical flaws from mounting in albums. The Toleteros sets feature players from the Puerto Rican Winter League from 1948 to 1951, and are particularly significant as they feature many players who appear in few or no other card sets. Included are many Negro League stars, as well as many Major Leaguers who played in the Puerto Rican Winter League during the off-season. The 1948-1949 series was the first issue and is highlighted by the offered rookie card of Kansas City Monarchs star pitcher Hilton Smith. This is a magnificent example with a crisp image, flawless surface, and four razor-sharp corners. Centered to the top with a small, almost imperceptible at first glance, stain near the "Hilt" in his first name. Clean, boldly printed reverse, free of any flaws or residue of any kind. This is an outstanding example of this very difficult card, extremely desirable in any grade and all the more significant in this ultra high grade, of Hall of Famer Hilton Smith. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,629
