1949 Bowman Complete Master Set (240 Plus 12 Variations)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,851
17% grade Vg-Ex to Ex (with a few Ex-Mt), 45% Vg, 29% Gd, and 9% lesser (including a few trimmed). Complete master set of 1949 Bowman, one of the most popular and classic of all baseball card-sets. The offered master set consists of the 240 basic cards plus the twelve variations with front (name printed on front) or back (script name) changes. Many rookie cards of Hall of Famers are featured in this classic postwar issue, highlighted by Richie Ashburn, Duke Snider, Roy Campanella, Robin Roberts, Early Wynn, and Bob Lemon. While the condition of cards from this set spans several grades, many of the lesser-graded cards are very pleasing and exhibit bright colors and crisp focus. This set has been consigned by the family of an old-time collector. We have selected three cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. Keys: #1 Bickford (Vg-Ex), 11 Boudreau (Pr), 23 Doerr (Vg-Ex), 24 Musial (Pr), 26 Kell (Fr), 27 Feller (miscut, Vg-Ex+), 29 Kiner (Vg-Ex+), 33 Spahn (Pr), 36 Reese (handcut, Gd), 46 Roberts RC (Gd/Vg), 50 Robinson (SGC EX/NM 80), 60 Berra (SGC EX/NM 80), 65 Slaughter (Fr), 70 Furillo RC (Vg), 84 Campanella RC (Gd), 85a Mize NNOF (Vg-Ex), 98a Rizzuto NNOF (Vg-Ex), 100 Hodges RC (Vg+), 110 Wynn RC (Fr), 111 Schoendienst (Vg+), 162 Roe RC (Fr), 175 Appling (Fr), 194 Branca RC (Fr/Gd), 210 Gordon (Vg), 214 Ashburn RC (Gd+), 224 Paige (Pr due to tape in each of four corners, but otherwise bright and crisp presenting Ex), 225 Coleman RC (Ex+), 226 Snider RC (SGC VG 40), 229 Lopat RC (Fr/Gd), 233 Doby (Vg-Ex+), and 238 Lemon RC (Vg). Variations: #4, 78, 83, 85 Mize NOF (Pr/Fr), 88, 98 Rizzuto NOF (Pr/Fr due to tape marks in corners), 109, 124, 126, 127, 132, and 143. The common variations range in grade from Vg to Ex. 1949 Bowman is the most underrated set in terms of rarity among Topps and Bowman sets issued between 1948 and 1955. We rarely see 1949 Bowman sets, and the offered set presents a potentially outstanding collecting value compared to a higher-grade complete set. The equivalent SMR value for just the graded Robinson and Berra cards is $1,025. Total: 252 cards (complete set of 240 plus 12 variations). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,851
