Circa 1947 Bond Bread Jackie Robinson Sliding SGC-Graded Pair

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,896

Presented is a pair of Jackie Robinson (sliding pose) cards from the circa 1947 Bond Bread set. The thirteen-card set is devoted entirely to Jackie Robinson and features the Brooklyn Dodgers Hall of Famer in various black-and-white poses on glossy card stock. The two cards offered here are part of a newly discovered collection which originates from the family of a bakery delivery driver who almost certainly obtained these cards in the year of issue as part of his work and had them safely stored away for more than six decades. (Interesting note: The large collection of 1950 Drake's Cakes cards in this auction are also from this same collection!) The two cards, submitted by REA to SGC, grade EX 60 and VG/EX+ 55. Each is bright and crisp with near-perfect centering. Only light touches of wear to the delicate corners account for the modest technical grades despite each having a far superior appearance. The backs, which feature an image of Robinson alongside a testimonial for Bond Bread as well as advertising for the company, are boldly printed and entirely clean. (Important set dating note: In the past, guides have always dated all Jackie Robinson Bond Bread cards as issued in 1947. Recent outstanding research assembled by two true card scholars and presented on Net54 conclusively proves the set was actually issued over a period of several years, 1947-1950. That is why we've added a "circa" to "1947" in this description. Here's the link: http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=171169.) The circa 1947 Bond Bread issue is a historic set, dating from Jackie Robinson's earliest days in the Major Leagues, and individual cards from this classic issue will always be extremely desirable. Total: 2 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,896
