1948 Bowman Complete Set (48)
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $2,370
Offered is a complete set of forty-eight cards from the 1948 Bowman series, the first baseball-card set issued by Bowman Gum, highlighted by key rookie cards of many stars and Hall of Famers. Condition: 23% range in grade from Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt (or better), 52% grade Vg-Ex to Ex, and 25% grade Vg or lesser. A few upgrades would make this a very strong mid- to high-grade complete set. Thirteen cards have been graded and encapsulated by PSA. Keys: #1 Elliot RC (VG-EX 4), 2 Blackwell (VG-EX 4), 3 Kiner RC (VG 3), 4 Mize (Vg), 5 Feller (VG-EX 4), 6 Berra RC (EX+ 5.5), 7 Reiser SP (Ex), 8 Rizzuto RC (VG-EX 4), 12 Sain RC (Ex), 14 Reynolds RC (Ex), 17 Slaughter (no bottom border, otherwise Ex-Mt), 18 Spahn RC (no bottom border, otherwise Ex), 19 Henrich (Vg-Ex+), 21 Fain RC (Fr), 22 Bevins SP (Ex), 29 Page RC (Vg-Ex+), 35 Stirnweiss RC (Ex+), 36 Musial RC (EX-MT 6 [MC]), 38 Schoendienst (EX-MT 6), 40 Marion RC (Pr), 45 Sauer RC (NM-MT 8), 47 Thomson RC (Ex), and 48 Koslo (trimmed). Other Graded Cards: #24 (EX-MT 6), 37 (EX-MT+ 6.5), 42 (NM 7), and 46 (NM-MT 8). Relatively affordable yet still very attractive complete set of Bowman's first baseball-card set and one of most important gum-card issues of the postwar era. The total SMR value for just seven of the thirteen graded cards (not including the cards PSA graded less than EX, not including the qualified key rookie of Musial, and not including the thirty-five ungraded cards!) is $945. Total: 48 cards. Reserve $400. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,370
