1934 V94 Butterfinger Canadian Premium Near-Complete Set (55/56)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,422

Issued in 1934 as a premium with Butterfinger and other candy products, and catalogued V94 in the American Card Catalog, this large-format (6-1/2 x 8-1/2 inches) sepia-toned set is printed on thin stock and was issued in Canada. This set is almost identical to the U.S. Butterfinger issue (R310) but is smaller and includes a number of players not found in the U.S. series. Offered is an exceptional near-complete set of 55 cards, missing only one common (Stout) for completion. Complete or near-complete sets of this issue are very rare in even the most advanced hobby circles. In fact, they are virtually nonexistent! This is only the second collection of V94 Butterfinger Premiums in any sizable quantity that REA has ever handled. REA offered a near-complete set of 50 V94 Butterfinger premiums in the 2008 auction, which had been consigned by an old-time collector who had spent many years researching the set. He came to the conclusion that the set was complete at 56 cards and not 59 as checklisted in the Standard Catalog at the time. The checklist in the Standard Catalog listed two different Foxx variations (name incorrect and name correct, as found in the American R310 Butterfinger set) as well as Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Since that auction, the Standard Catalog has removed Ruth and Gehrig from the checklist (citing their existence as questionable). Our original consignor firmly believes that only the "name correct" version of Foxx exists in the Canadian Butterfinger set. While we cannot be sure about the existence of the Foxx variation, we do know that everyone agrees on at least 56 premiums being issued and an incredible 55 of them are presented in this lot. Butterfinger selected the greatest stars of the day for inclusion in this premium set. Included are sixteen Hall of Famers. Keys: Averill (Vg-Ex), Bottomley (Vg, faint fold visible from reverse), Cochrane (Fr, tiny pinhole at top and small tear on right border), Cronin (Gd/Vg), Dean (Ex), Dickey (Vg/Vg-Ex), Ferrell (Ex), Foxx (Vg-Ex), Gehringer (small pencil notation on reverse, otherwise Vg-Ex/Ex), Gomez (Vg-Ex), Grove (Fr), Hafey (Gd), Harris (Gd/Vg), Hoyt (Ex), Simmons (tiny pinholes at the top and bottom, otherwise Vg-Ex), and P. Waner (horizontal fold, otherwise Ex). The balance of the premiums range in grade from Vg to Ex (with a few slightly lesser). The fragile paper stock of this issue makes high-grade examples extremely rare, and flaws such as light wrinkling, creasing, or tearing "come with the territory" and account almost entirely for the low technical grades on some of the examples which otherwise present as Excellent. This is a very clean and crisp near-complete collection of the rare V94 Butterfinger Canadian Premium set. Total: 55 premiums. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,422
