1939 R303-B Goudey Black & White and Sepia Complete Sets (2)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,252
Presented are two exceptionally high-grade complete sets (one is actually a near-complete set; it is missing one card) of R303-B Goudey Premiums in both sepia and black-and-white varieties. The sepia set is complete at twenty-four cards while the black-and-white set contains twenty-three of the twenty-four cards (missing only Rudy York for completion). Both sets feature the exact same lineup of twenty-four players; the only difference is the coloring of the fronts, which were available in both sepia and black-and-white. Thus there are TWO examples of each Hall of Famer in the set in this collection, including Joe DiMaggio. These are in exceptionally high grade for this issue. These are easily among the finest R303-B sets we have ever handled! R303-B premiums are noted for their outstanding star power as fourteen of the twenty-four cards within the set feature Hall of Famers: Joe DiMaggio, Jimmy Foxx, Mel Ott, Bob Feller, Luke Appling, Joe Cronin, Bill Dickey, Lefty Gomez, Joe Gordon, Hank Greenberg, Billy Herman, Ernie Lombardi, Al Simmons, and Arky Vaughan. Measuring 4.75 by 7.25 inches, these premium cards are very easily damaged and do not often survive in the high grade found in this collection. The offered sets are outstanding in every way! Bright, crisp, and clean front and back, with near-perfect centering and flawless registration. At first glance, almost all the cards present as Near Mint. Close inspection reveals light wear to the corners on many cards, a minor flaw that is almost always present in this issue. The black-and-white set technically grades Ex (with a few Vg-Ex) due to corner wear while the sepia set grades Ex to Ex-Mt (with one lesser) for the same reason. The key DiMaggio cards grade Ex (black and white) and Ex-Mt (sepia). Every card in this collection has a far superior appearance than suggested by its technically accurate assigned grade. 1939 Goudey premiums have received relatively little attention from collectors compared to traditional gum cards of the era, and a strong case can easily be made that they represent one of the best values of all 1930s baseball issues. This is an extremely impressive pair of complete sets (minus one card) of 1939 R303-B Goudey gum-card premiums with many highlights, both in terms of condition and the remarkably high percentage of Hall of Famers (fourteen different, each in sepia and black-and-white, for a total twenty-eight Hall of Famers!) and stars included. Total: 47 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $2,252
