1887 N175 Gypsy Queen Jim Donnelly SGC EX+ 70
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,778
Graded EX+ 70 by SGC. Scarce N175 "Small" Gypsy Queen of Jim Donnelly of the Washington Nationals. This card is the same size and general format as N172 Old Judge, but with a slightly different design, and advertising for Goodwin's Gypsy Queen brand of tobacco. There has always been some confusion as to the catalog number of the smaller Gypsy Queens (similar in size to N172s and not to be confused with the even rarer large-sized N175 Gypsy Queens, of which nine different cards are known) because the catalog does not distinguish between the two sizes of cards represented by "N175." This card has an extremely strong image, a quality highly prized among nineteenth-century collectors. Minimal wear to the corners (most noticeable in the bottom right), excellent centering, and only a small, almost imperceptible abrasion on the extreme right edge (mentioned for the sake of accuracy). The blank reverse is almost entirely clean with only a few small age spots visible. Remarkable high grade for this rare issue with only two examples of any subject ever graded higher by SGC. This is an extremely sharp-looking, high-grade sample from this rare and unusual Old Judge-related nineteenth-century issue. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,778
