1890 N172 Old Judge Dell Darling, Chicago (Players' League)
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $948
Presented is one of N172 Old Judge’s great rarities: the 1890 Players' League designation card featuring Dell Darling with Chicago. All 1890 Players' League cards are extremely rare and very highly prized by serious nineteenth-century collectors. Only a few examples (in some cases only one!) of some particularly rare Old Judge Players' League cards are known to exist. 1890 was the last year that Old Judge issued baseball cards (they did so in only very limited numbers) and that was also by chance the only year of existence of the short-lived Players' League. The offered card was found in a very old-time collection of N172 Old Judges consigned to this auction (the balance of which appears in separate lots). This is a very pleasing low-grade example of this significant rarity. Encapsulated POOR 10 by SGC. The card is free of any creases and displays particularly strong photo contrast for an N172 1890 Players' League card (which are notorious for having extremely poor photo contrast). The card is appropriately downgraded primarily due to a large chip in the lower left corner. There is also even rounding to the other three corners and and album residue (including extra paper) and paper loss on the blank reverse. The missing piece in the lower left is certainly the most serious condition issue. Despite the modest condition, this is a card that will likely be of great interest to serious Old Judge collectors. The first example that we can ever recall offering, this is a very important and extremely rare Old Judge, issued during one of the nineteenth-century baseball’s most turbulent periods. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $948
