1933 R319 Goudey #144 Babe Ruth SGC EX+ 70
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,444
Graded EX+ 70 by SGC. A very attractive example of the ideal classic Babe Ruth bubble-gum card, featuring the Babe in his classic follow-through batting pose. Goudey must have also realized this was the most classic pose as, of all the cards in the set, this is the card it chose to double print when replacing the missing card #106 during production. This continues to be one of Ruth's most popular and recognizable baseball cards. Because of being double-printed by Goudey (there were exactly twice as many Ruth #144s printed as any other card in the same series), this card also represents the best value among the four Babe Ruth cards in the 1933 Goudey set. This card is one of the highlights from an original-owner Goudey set consigned to this auction. The Ruth and Gehrig cards are being offered separately as individual lots due to their exceptional grades and value (all submitted by REA). This is a very attractive example with brilliant colors and no creases. Centered slightly to the top. The corners show slight, even wear, but still remain square. Crisp and clean, both front and back, and with an extremely boldly printed reverse. This is a very impressive card with much stronger eye-appeal than suggested by the assigned grade, sharing almost all of the qualities of a higher-graded example. The equivalent SMR value in EX 5 is $3,300. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $4,444
