1933 R319 Goudey Partial Set (152/240) Including Four Ruths and Gehrig

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,148

Presented is a partial set of 1933 R319 Goudey Gum cards featuring 152 of the 240 cards in the set, highlighted by the presence of all four cards of Babe Ruth as well as one of the two Lou Gehrigs. In total, thirty-six Hall of Fame cards are included in this partial set. This partial set has been consigned directly by the family of the original owner, who obviously enjoyed his cards very much as a youngster as this entire collection would grade Poor (with some Fair) due to tack holes, writing, and creasing throughout. We submitted the four Ruth cards to SGC for grading: they each received grades of POOR 10 with the exception of #53, which graded Authentic due to a portion of the lower right corner missing. The following cards are missing for completion: #1 Bengough, 2 Vance, 4, 6, 8, 10-14, 16, 17, 19 Dickey, 20 Terry, 23 Cuyler, 24, 25 Waner, 26, 28, 29 Foxx, 31 Lazzeri, 32-34, 35 Simmons, 39, 41, 43, 45, 46, 49 Frisch, 50-52, 55, 56 Ruffing, 58, 62, 64 Grimes, 66, 72, 74 Rixey, 75, 76 Cochrane, 77, 80, 87, 89 Speaker, 92 Gehrig, 94, 95, 99, 106 Lajoie, 108, 118, 120, 132, 139, 145, 146, 157, 166, 172, 183, 189 Cronin, 190, 194 Averill, 195, 196, 197 Ferrell, 199, 201, 202 Hartnett, 205, 208, 209, 211 Wilson, 214, 215, 219, 220 Grove, 221, 222 Gehringer, 223 Dean, 224, 230 Hubbell, 234 Hubbell, and 238. Also included in this collection are thirty cards (twenty-nine different) from the 1934 R320 Goudey set in comparable condition. Eleven Hall of Famers are included in the 1934 set: #2 Cochrane, 10 Klein, 11 Waner, 12 Hubbell, 13 Frisch, 19 Grove, two 22 Vaughan, 23 Gehringer, 34 Hafey, and 35 Lombardi. The 1933 Goudey set is universally recognized as the single most popular and collected of all 1930s gum issues, and one of the most significant of all prewar baseball-card issues. While this collection will never win any beauty contests, it does provide the opportunity to acquire an outstanding foundation for the assembly of a complete set of this classic prewar issue. The equivalent SMR value for just the three numerically graded Ruth cards (not including the one Ruth encapsulated as "Authentic" or the 148 additional ungraded cards, including Gehrig) is $2,000. Total: 152 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000++. SOLD FOR $4,148
