1915 D303 General Baking Co. Tris Speaker - Highest Graded!

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,370

Addendum: The title in the printed catalog incorrectly referred to the offered card as Mother's Bread. The online title and description accurately classify the card as General Baking.

Graded VG-EX+ 4.5 by PSA. Highest-graded example of Tris Speaker from the D303 General Baking issue. Issued in 1916 by the General Baking Company, this series shares designs with several closely related caramel issues (E90-1 American Caramel Company, E106 American Caramel, T216 Kotton, etc.) from the same era. All General Baking cards are rare, but an example of Hall of Famer Tris Speaker is especially noteworthy and desirable. This important card of Speaker is one of the key cards to the set and the design is also considered by many to be one of the most visually appealing cards of Speaker ever produced. A full-length ready-to-bat pose of the Boston Red Sox outfielder is set against a colorful landscape which includes a majestic multicolored sky. The offered example is outstanding in every way, with vibrant colors, a crisp, flawless image, near-perfect centering, and even hints of wear to the corners. The reverse is clean with light toning visible and a flawless advertisement for General Baking and its products. Free of any creases or wrinkles, both front and back. A total of only five D303 General Baking Speakers have ever been graded according to the combined population reports of PSA and SGC (the offered PSA VG-EX+ 4.5, two SGC FAIR 20, and two PSA PR 1). In addition, only one card of any player (a single SGC EX 60) has ever been graded higher, making VG-EX+ an exceptionally high grade for this issue. This very clean and extremely attractive example of Tris Speaker from this rare prewar food issue would be a key addition to any rare Hall of Famer, D303 General Baking, or Tris Speaker collection.Reserve $500.
