1888 Cincinnati Red Stockings Team Cabinet Card with Bid McPhee!
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,259
Extremely rare team composite cabinet card (4-1/8 x 5-7/8 inches) featuring portraits of the 1888 Cincinnati Red Stockings, including Hall of Famer Bid McPhee. Pictured (starting from the top left, reading from left to right) are Pop Corkhill, Jim Keenan, Hugh Nicol, George Tebeau, Lee Viau, Kid Baldwin, Tony Mullane, Mike Smith, Hart, John Reilly, Billy Serad, Heinie Kappel, Jack O'Connor, Hick Carpenter, Bid McPhee, and Frank Fennelly. Each player is identified in block print beneath his portrait. Elaborate advertising for Levi & Gold Studios of Cincinnati, Ohio, appears on the reverse. Nineteenth-century team cabinets have always been highly prized by card collectors. This is one of the very few cards to feature Bid McPhee. We do not recall ever seeing (let alone offering) another example of this particular cabinet card previously. The offered example has exceptionally strong contrast and photo quality (some of the name blocks are a little light, as made). Bright, clean, and perfectly centered. The card has a slight trim along the bottom border which has resulted in a very small chip in the lower left corner; the remnants of a virtually imperceptible thin strip of tape on the reverse is evidence of the card at one time being framed or very carefully tipped into an album and removed; the card is otherwise crisp and clean and in Near Mint condition. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $3,259
