1910 E125 American Caramel Die-cut Christy Mathewson

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,015

This key Hall of Famer from the extremely rare E125 American Caramel series is one of Christy Mathewson’s rarest cards. Circa 1910, the American Caramel Co. issued one large die-cut card per box of caramels. They were designed as "stand-up" cards with fold-back tabs to allow the players to stand on their own. The E125 Christy Mathewson (wind-up pose) has survived complete, with all flaps complete and intact. The top portion of the card, featuring Mathewson in his New York Giants uniform in ideal pitching pose, is bright and clean, presenting as Excellent. The bottom half of the card displays evidence of damage (possibly from moisture) which has caused heavy surface flaking on Mathewson's leg as well as staining and weakening of the card stock at the base. The reverse, which features a complete checklist of the New York Giants in the set and advertising for American Caramels, shows further evidence of exposure to moisture which has caused dark staining. Small areas of excess paper are present as well, suggesting that this card may have been housed in a scrapbook at one point in time and/or suggesting the possibility that the condition issues have been remedied in part by restoration. Encapsulated as "Authentic" by SGC. Despite the obvious condition flaws (which are more apparent from the reverse) this is, as can easily be seen, still a very presentable and extremely striking example of one of the rarest of all Christy Mathewson cards, from one of the most elusive of all caramel-card issues. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,015
