1887 N172 Old Judge New York Giants Mascot
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $711
Graded GOOD+ 35 by SGC. New York Giants Mascot (pose #294-1) from the N172 Old Judge set. The young mascot, Willie Breslin, is dressed in a miniature New York Giants uniform, true to form in every detail to those worn by the players. (Note: Mascot Willie Breslin appears in the Old Judge set twice. His appearance with Hall of Famer Buck Ewing on the Old Judge "Ewing and Mascot" card is one of the most well known of all nineteenth-century baseball-card images. This card of mascot Willie Breslin posing alone is far rarer.) The offered example has four sharp corners, excellent centering, and a flawless surface free of any creasing or wrinkling. The photo contrast, as can easily be seen, is a little light (which is not uncommon with Old Judges) but still very presentable. The card has been downgraded from a much higher technical grade due to a 3/4-inch stain on the blank reverse near the bottom border. Many serious nineteenth-century collectors are more forgiving of condition issues affecting the reverse as these cards were so often mounted in albums for display. This is an outstanding example of one of the most interesting cards in the entire Old Judge set. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $711
