1909-1911 T206 White Border Collection (85)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $8,888
Exceptionally crisp newly discovered collection of eighty-five cards from the T206 White Border series. These cards have not seen the light of day in over 100 years and appear as bright, crisp, and clean as the day they were issued! Carefully preserved and protected from all elements in an album since the time they were removed from packs, these cards instantly stand out as remarkably fresh and clean and perfectly preserved. A total of nineteen Hall of Famers are included in this collection, which was consigned to this auction by a non-collecting family. Interestingly, the collection also included the extremely rare Joe Tinker printing error (only the third example ever documented), which is offered as a separate lot in this auction. The majority of the cards within this collection present as Ex to Nr/Mt-Mt on front, with minor technical flaws on the reverses related to their removal from the album, including adhesive residue and small areas of paper loss, causing them to technically grade very modestly. Some cards show visible wear or slight evidence of trimming (not done maliciously and perhaps tracing back to irregular cuts at the factory). We have selected six cards to be graded and encapsulated by PSA. The grades in the following condition composite are without reference to any adhesive residue on the reverse (paper loss on the back is noted). Keys: Bender/no trees (Vg), Bresnahan/portrait (EX-MT 6 [MK]), Bresnahan/with bat (slight trim, otherwise Ex+), Brown/portrait (slight trim, Ex front, paper loss), Chance/red portrait (Ex+, paper loss), Chance/yellow portrait (GOOD+ 2.5), Clarke/portrait (GOOD+ 2.5), Evers/portrait (Nr/Mt, paper loss), Griffith/portrait (Nr/Mt-Mt, paper loss), Huggins/portrait (no top border, Ex front, paper loss), Jennings/one hand (Vg), Kleinow/Boston (EX-MT+ 6.5), Lundgren/Chicago (Fr), Marquard/portrait (Ex+, paper loss), Marquard/hands at thighs (Ex+, paper loss), Mathewson/portrait (GOOD+ 2.5), Mathewson/white cap ("Authentic," trimmed), McGraw/no cap (Vg-Ex, paper loss), Tinker/portrait (Ex, paper loss), Willis/with bat (Ex, miscut), and Willis/portrait (Ex). Approximately three dozen commons have some degree of paper loss on the reverse, but the majority are clean (no paper loss) with only the adhesive residue visible. This is an outstanding collection of cards in an extremely unusual and desirable condition from the most popular and classic of all prewar trading-card sets. Obtaining these cards in the ultra high grades with which we are normally accustomed to seeing such exceptional presentation (bold colors, perfect centering, and sharp corners) would cost tens of thousands of dollars (or more). Instead, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a sizable group of cards sharing almost all the qualities of much higher-grade examples at a fraction of the cost. The total SMR value of just four of the graded cards (not including the "Authentic" Mathewson and the qualified Bresnahan, factoring in the half-grades at the lower whole-grade level, and not including the 79 ungraded cards!) is $1,365. Total: 85 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $8,888
